Working A Summer Job In Business, While In High School, Has Many Career Benefits
Summer jobs provide a lot of benefits for high school students. Successfully working an entire summer season can boost a teen’s confidence and give them the opportunity to feel successful in applying for, training at, and working a job in the longer-term. Summer jobs, as important career prep steps, can also teach high school students more adept time management skills, stronger working habits, earnings responsibility, budgeting, and even greater personal independence.
With many high school students currently planning for a career in business, after their graduation, choosing a summer job in that field can create a robust professional start. Of course, the term “business” encompasses a large range of specialty fields and, by extension, opportunities within those fields. As consumer trends and innovations in technology continue to drive new opportunities for career prep and development in business, new options will also emerge for people.
Our research partner, Emsi Burning Glass, has compiled data to pinpoint the top five summer jobs for high school students in the professional business field, for those seeking a strong career prep start that is also critically-current and future-ready. Let’s take a look at what the data reveals…
With targeted career prep learning during the high school years, and the benefits of working a summer job in the business sector, professional options are typically available for those students looking to start their careers right away. So, let’s take an even closer look at each of the summer jobs on this list.
Retail Sales Associate: If you like helping others and being social with a wide variety of people that you’ve just met, then taking on a high school summer job as a retail sales associate could be a good fit for you. This job entails direct customer service in a fast-paced environment, as you help customers find merchandise and purchase new products in a store. Duties often include ensuring the store is appropriately stocked with current merchandise, assisting customers with their inquiries as needed, and performing transactions like sales and item returns.
Office/Administrative Assistant: This summer job can be an excellent option for people who enjoy the organized routines of an office environment. Administrative assistants play an important role in organizing, managing, and keeping an office running in an efficient day-to-day manner. Most administrative assistants are responsible for clerical and organizational tasks like file organizing, scheduling meetings and appointments, assisting other staff members, and drafting correspondences. Answering phone calls and talking directly with clients is also involved in this professional summer business job.
Customer Service Representative: For those who might prefer to try a summer business job that could be done on-site or remotely, this role could be a terrific fit. Customer service representatives help customers with their complaints and questions, give customers information about products and services, take customer orders, and process needed returns. By helping customers better understand the products they are interested in, and answering questions about any of their potential concerns, customer service representatives (CSRs) are sometimes also seen as having a role in the sales department, too.
Laborer/Warehouse Worker: If you are someone who enjoys staying up on your feet and being active for the better part of your day, then a summer job in business as a laborer/warehouse worker may be just the spot for you. Not every job in the business sector requires sitting at a desk for eight hours. A laborer/warehouse worker is typically responsible for a wide variety of daily tasks (many of which are oriented around physical activity), such as restocking shelves, accepting incoming orders, processing and packaging the orders, counting current inventory, and ensuring that all orders are shipped in a timely manner.
Production Worker: Perhaps you see yourself more as a puzzle-solver, or a builder, in regards to having a career in the business field. If so, then a summer job as a production worker could be an excellent choice to get you started. Production workers produce and assemble products inside of factories, and this provides a large portion of the consumer goods for many people the world-over. Production workers often operate and maintain critical machinery, and they typically ensure that production standards are safely met. Business workers in this role also finalize products and prepare them for shipping to customers.
