Stride’s Commitments to Privacy

This Privacy Policy applies to all websites and applications that we operate that contain a direct link to this Privacy Policy, and explains how we collect, use, disclose, and protect information about individuals who use the Services. It applies to information we get over the Internet, by phone, through the mail, through the Services, or by other means. By using the Sites (defined below), you accept the collection, use, and disclosure of information in accordance with this Privacy Policy. Please read it carefully before you use the Sites. Please note that the Services are designed for users in the United States only and are not intended for users located outside the United States.

IMPORTANT: Please direct all requests related to FERPA-covered education records and course data directly to the public school in which the student is enrolled. As a service provider to those schools, we cannot delete or modify education records or other records collected or processed for, or on behalf of, a school, unless directed to do so by the school.

What definitions apply to the Privacy Policy?

  • “Control” means the direct or indirect possession of the power to direct or cause the direction of the management policies of an entity.
  • “Local School” means the school that contracts with Stride for a Stride School Program.
  • “OLS” means Stride’s online learning solutions, including but not limited to K12 Online School, Stride Online School, or any other Stride affiliated online learning providers.
  • “Personal Information” (or “PI”) means information that can be used on its own or with other information to identify, contact, or locate someone.
  • “Services” means the Sites, applications, services, tools and features, or other means by which you interact with Stride.
  • “Sites” means Stride’s websites, including this one.
  • “Stride” (“we,” “us,” “our”) means Stride, Inc. and its subsidiaries that Control Stride, Inc., are Controlled by Stride, Inc., or are under common Control with Stride, Inc., including Tallo.
  • “Stride School Program” means a school that offers education programs or services we provide.
  • “Tallo” means Tallo LLC.

What Personal Information does Stride collect?

Users of the Services

The Personal Information you provide will vary depending on how you interact with us, including which Sites and which parts of certain Sites you use. Some features of the Sites may require you to enter information about yourself. You may decide not to provide this information, but doing so may prevent you from using or accessing these features.

What laws generally apply to student records?

Stride is subject to laws that protect education records. This includes the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (“FERPA”) and state laws about student records (e.g., Student Online Personal Information Protection Act, Student Online Personal Information Protection Act, or similar state law). Other entities (e.g., curriculum vendors and third-party special education or individual education plan vendors) can access those records only as permitted under those laws, and they agree to keep them confidential as required by those same laws. Stride does not use student Personal Information to target the student for advertising. Stride does not sell a student’s Personal Information or create profiles about a student without authorization. Stride does not use (unless we ask for and receive permission) a student’s Personal Information for purposes unrelated to providing the Services except as otherwise permitted by applicable law.

Does Stride disclose Personal Information?

We may disclose Personal Information in different circumstances. Generally, we may disclose your Personal Information to third parties for legitimate purposes subject to this Privacy Policy, including the following categories of third parties:

  • Our affiliates or others within our corporate group.
  • Vendors or other service providers who help us provide the Services, including for system administration, online learning platform provision, cloud storage, security, customer relationship management, digital promotion, to provide educational products and services, marketing communications, web analytics, payment networks, and payment processing.
  • Our enterprise, employer and academic partners, Local Schools and school districts.
  • Third parties for marketing purposes.
  • Third parties to whom you request or direct us to disclose information, such as for the use of your or your child’s Local School.
  • Professional advisors, such as auditors, law firms, or accounting firms.
  • Third parties in connection with or anticipation of an asset sale, merger, transfer, or other business transaction, including in the context of a bankruptcy.
  • Accreditors, regulatory or professional oversight bodies, for audit or evaluation purposes or, when applicable, to potential employers for verification.

Regarding the Tallo platform and to the extent you share your personal information on the platform, such information, including certain profile information, posts, and interactions, will be available to other users of the platform. In connection with Tallo, we reserve the right to send you information on our behalf and on behalf of third parties (i.e., our employer and enterprise partners) as necessary to provide the Services. If you no longer want to receive this information from us, you will need to close your Tallo account.

We may disclose your information as needed to protect the safety and security of our users or Site, comply with applicable law or any obligations thereunder or to cooperate with law enforcement, judicial orders, and regulatory inquiries, to enforce any applicable terms of service, and to ensure the safety and security of our business, employees, and users.

How does Stride use Personal Information?

Stride uses Personal Information to provide our Services, including educational services to children enrolled in a Local School, tutoring services, other education related online community platforms managed by Stride, communication services with teachers and/or other users, Local Schools, to contact you and provide customer service and to otherwise support you and your child for things such as testing, curriculum, academic progress, attendance, customer service, communication, student affairs, accommodations or special education, or for health or safety purposes.

For certain Sites, once you have registered your child in a Local School for a Stride School Program or for tutoring or other services, there may be a page that contains some or all of the Personal Information. You may also be assigned a Member ID and password and may create, at your discretion, a Member ID for your child any time you are logged on to the OLS. If you choose someone other than yourself as a learning coach, that person will also be assigned a Member ID. The Member IDs will be used to identify you, the learning coach, and your child on the OLS. The Member IDs will be associated with the following information: your first and last name; registration ID; type of account, such as teacher, administrator, parent, learning coach or student (if you created a separate Member ID and password for your child or learning coach); your child’s Local School; integration number; the e-mail address, and the education records of your child connected with the account. The Member IDs and the OLS will allow you and the learning coach to track your child’s attendance, school work, and testing, and to submit that to Stride or your Local School to follow your child’s progress and comply with law.

In addition, parts of our Services and products, such as our chatbots, may be supported by artificial intelligence (AI) technologies designed to personalize user interactions based on individual preferences. For instance, if a user indicates an interest in a particular topic, the AI will tailor its responses and suggestions accordingly. In addition, you may be able to create content, such as storybooks, on certain Sites, which rely on AI tools. This personalized information may be shared across our product lines and affiliates, as well as with service providers essential to the functionality of these products. We may use and retain information and content collected or generated in connection with AI technologies to operate, provide, and improve the Services.

Depending on your relationship with us, we may use your Personal Information for one or more of the following purposes: administering applications and enrollment, providing educational services, personalizing content and experiences, analyzing and improving our services, content, functionality and the usability of our Sites, completing applicant and employee background checks, administering employment benefits and providing employee services, securing and protecting our assets and rights and preventing misconduct and violations to our Terms of Use, complying with legal obligations, inviting you to participate in surveys and provide feedback to us, having a better understanding of your needs and interests, contacting you with information that may be of interest to you, improving marketing and promotional efforts and supporting our general business.

Stride or your Local School may use the Personal Information you provide to contact you or your child’s learning coach about your child’s progress, testing, attendance, or other school issues or for customer service, and quality control. The Personal Information is also used to provide services to you, your child or your child’s Local School, or to carry out activities that you or your child’s Local School have requested. Stride also uses Personal Information you supply to satisfy requests for information, and to deliver requested services to you and your child.

We use Website Usage Data to monitor and improve our Sites and better understand your engagement with the Services. We also use it to study Internet traffic trends and use third party content moderation tools to monitor written content, messages and communications on our Sites, and to customize and personalize content, administer the Sites, and gather information.

Where permitted by law, Stride may use your information to provide you with information about new products or services available through Stride and may analyze Personal Information to improve the educational experience, improve Stride’s services, or to determine how Stride’s educational products and services may interest other people.

We retain your Personal Information for as long as is reasonably necessary for the purposes specified in this Privacy Policy. When determining the length of time to retain your information, we consider various criteria, including whether we need the information to continue to provide you the Services, resolve a dispute, enforce our contractual agreements, prevent harm, promote safety, security, and integrity, or protect ourselves, including our rights, property, or products. We also retain backups of certain data for archival and record-keeping purposes and as required by applicable law.

How do Stride’s Sites use “cookies” and similar technologies?

When you visit our Sites, the server creates a piece of text known as a “cookie” to put on your device. The cookie is unique to your browser. It lets the server remember information about your visit. We use first-party and third-party cookies to provide the Sites, understand and improve how you use the Sites, and to personalize content to align with your interests. If your child is in a Stride School Program, we only use cookies to enable the functionality of the OLS.

We and third parties on our behalf collect certain information about your interaction with the Services through cookies, including device information (e.g., device type, operating system, unique device identifier, and internet protocol (IP) address), geolocation information, and other information regarding your interactions with our Sites and services (e.g., log data, date and time stamps, clickstream data) (collectively, “Website Usage Data”).

Most web browsers automatically accept cookies, but you may be able to control the way in which your devices permit the use of such cookies. If you decline, block, or delete cookies, certain interactive features of our Sites and some services on the Sites may not function the way they should. If you have questions regarding the specific information about you that we process or retain, as well as your choices regarding our collection and use practices, please contact us using the information listed below.

How does Stride treat Personal Information about children under 13 years old?

Stride receives Personal Information about children who are under the age of 13 in certain circumstances. When our Services are used by a Local School in an educational setting, we rely on the Local School to create an account for the child and obtain consent on behalf of the Parent. Stride may receive Personal information directly from your child, such as information your child provides on the OLS as part of your child’s education in a Stride-powered School Program or through your child’s interactions with other services on our Sites.

For a child under the age of 13 years old, we require consent from the child’s parent or legal guardian to register for or access services outside the Local School educational setting, including participation in the national K12 Zone.

This subsection applies to you only if you are a California (or Colorado) resident. For purposes of this subsection, references to “Personal Information” shall include “Sensitive Personal Information,” as these terms are defined under the CCPA.

We do not have actual knowledge that we “sell” or “share” (as those terms are defined under the CCPA and used throughout this section) Personal Information of residents under 16 years of age. However, we sell, and have sold in the preceding 12 months, identifiers (such as email addresses) to affiliates and third parties for marketing purposes. We also share, and have in the preceding 12 months, shared identifiers and Internet activity collected through the installation of cookies, pixels, and other tracking technologies on certain Sites not directed at children, to affiliates and third parties for marketing purposes.

We may disclose your Personal Information to your Local School and the Stride School Program in which you are enrolled, your parent or legal guardian, your learning coach, other entities that perform certain functions for us, analytics and service providers, benefits providers, transaction processors, child and human service agencies, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (“NCME”) law enforcement (if appropriate or necessary), and when required by law. We may also share it with our affiliates, social media platforms (e.g., if you “comment” on a post), and other carefully selected business partners for commercial and/or marketing purposes, or as part of a business transfer.

Users under 18

Any California residents under the age of eighteen (18) who have registered to use the Services and who have posted content or information on the Services can request that such information be removed from the Services by contacting us at the e-mail, phone number or address set forth in the section at the bottom of this policy. Such request must state that they personally posted such content or information and detail where the content or information is posted. We will make reasonable, good faith efforts to remove the post from prospective public view or anonymize it so the resident cannot be individually identified. This removal process cannot ensure complete or comprehensive removal. For instance, third parties may have republished the post, and archived copies of it may be stored by search engines and other parties that we do not control.

In addition, California law permits residents to request certain details about how their “personal information” (as defined in California Civil Code Section 1798.83) is shared with third parties for their direct marketing purposes. We may from time to time elect to share certain personal information about you with third parties for those third parties’ direct marketing purposes. Residents may, under certain circumstances, obtain the categories of personal information shared and the names and addresses of all third parties that received personal information for their direct marketing purposes during the immediately prior calendar year. To make such a request, please contact us using the information listed below. Please note that we are only required to respond to one request per resident each year.

What are my additional privacy rights if I’m a resident of certain states?

Depending on the state you live in, you may have some or all the rights listed below in relation to information that we have collected about you. However, these rights are not absolute, and in certain cases, we may decline your request as permitted by law, including in the event you reside in a state that does not currently grant you these rights.

We have the right to limit your rights to the extent they adversely affect the rights and freedoms of others and, if your request is excessive, repetitive, or unfounded, to require payment from you. If a fee applies, we will advise the person making the request before completing the request, explain why a fee applies, and provide an estimate.

Only you, your parent or legal guardian (if you are not yet 18 years of age), or a person registered with the applicable Secretary of State that you authorize to act on your behalf may make a request related to your Personal Information. If you choose a person registered with the applicable Secretary of State to act on your behalf to submit your requests, we will require that the agent provide us with documentations evidencing their authorization to submit a request on your behalf. We will also require that you verify your identity directly with us. To verify your identity as a resident of one of the states mentioned above, we may request Personal Information from you to compare against our records. We will only use Personal Information provided in your request to verify your identity. If we believe that your request is fraudulent, we may take additional steps, as necessary, to verify your identity and your residence in the applicable state. We may also request that you sign a declaration under the penalty of perjury, where permissible under applicable state law. Making a verifiable consumer request does not require you to create an account with us.

You also have the right not to be discriminated against for exercising your privacy rights under the applicable state statutes. We will not discriminate against you (by, for example, denying goods or services to you or providing a different level of quality of goods or services to you) because you exercised any of these privacy rights.

What information is collected or shared about my communications on the Site?

We may have tools or services that help Users interact with others on our Sites such as message boards or chat rooms, video chatting, image or screen sharing, electronic mail, or social platforms. The information you share is not private and may be available to all users of that Site. We or others may store, display, reproduce, publish, or otherwise use such posts and other user generated content, and may or may not attribute it to you. Others may also have access to user generated content and may have the ability to share it with third parties. We cannot promise privacy of information that you disclose online in public areas or place in private messages to any other individual or group. Disclosure is at your own risk.

We reserve the right, but not the duty, to monitor your communications with others (including private messages with other users) and to publish your posts or interactions in other places on the Internet or in other formats. Stride may, in its sole discretion, use third-party service providers to assist with content moderation, and/or student or user safety. We may use certain information, which may include content reported to us, to create or use systems or models that can be automated to more swiftly detect, categorize, or act against illegal or harmful content. We may use third party AI technologies, including but not limited to, large language models, machine learning models, generative artificial intelligence models, or any other artificial intelligence enabled models (“AI Technologies”) for the purpose of content moderation, to assist with student or user safety, to permit users to create content on certain Sites, and otherwise provide and improve the Services. Deidentified or aggregated data may also be used to train these third parties’ AI Technologies.   Stride or any of its third-party websites or service providers may, at their discretion, choose to turn over or make content available to the Local School, appropriate personnel, including social workers or counselors, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (“NCME”), child or human protection agencies or services, and/or law enforcement agencies, if necessary or required.

What happens when I click on third-party websites links from Stride’s Sites?

The Sites may contain links to third-party websites or platforms (“Linked Sites”). These sites are not under Stride’s control. Stride is not responsible for the content on any Linked Site or the actions of any Linked Site. The links do not suggest that Stride recommends or endorse the Linked Site. Stride has no liability for your access to the Linked Sites. We are not responsible for the privacy or security of, or information found on, these Linked Sites. Access to the Linked Sites is at your own risk. If you follow links to sites or platforms that we do not control and are not affiliated with us, you should review the applicable privacy policy, notices and other terms on the Linked Sites because those websites are not covered by this Privacy Policy.

What are Stride’s data security practices?

Despite our reasonable efforts to protect your information, no security measures are impenetrable, and we cannot guarantee “perfect security.” Any information you send to us electronically, while using the services or otherwise interacting with us, may not be secure while in transit. We recommend that you do not use unsecure channels to send us sensitive or confidential information.

Will this Privacy Policy change?

We may update this policy from time to time to comply with applicable law and to remain consistent with any changes in our practices. We reserve the right to update this policy at any time, in which case we will update the “Privacy Policy Last Updated” data at the top of this Privacy Policy. If we materially change our practices relating to your Personal Information, we will make reasonable efforts to inform you of the change (e.g., contacting you by email or notifying you on the OLS if you are a student) and will take additional steps as required by applicable law. We will post and/or provide notice of any material changes to this policy. The effective date of this Privacy Policy is stated at the top of this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree to any updates to this Privacy Policy, please do not continue using or accessing our services.
