Students Gain Deeper Knowledge When Education Is Tailored To Their Personal Learning Styles
Understanding your learning style can improve your educational experiences, and it can deepen your comprehension of every subject you encounter. By targeting your personal learning style in classes, and in life, you’re making it easier on yourself to absorb all of relevant information available to you.
Depending on what resources you consult, the number of learning styles can be as low as three or as many as eight or more! Below is a brief description of four specific learning styles, one of which might be yours. Be sure to read through each, and then take the quiz at the end to find out!
#1: The Visual Learning Style
This is often referenced to be the most common learning style. Visual learners naturally retain information better when they can visualize the connections between all of the data points, as they process lessons in their classes. Visual learners learn best by seeing charts and graphs, lesson outlines, pictures, and even PowerPoint presentations. For visual learners a picture truly is worth a thousand words.
#2: The Auditory Learning Style
Auditory learners tend to do best in educational settings where they can hear the information, as opposed to just seeing it. Auditory learning is enhanced by hearing lectures and read-a-louds, by having access to listening centers, by working through verbal instructions and discussions, as well as engaging in “repeat exercises” with a friend and/or study partner. Repetition in speech is key for auditory learners.
#3: The Read/Write Learning Style
The read/write learner actually learns best directly through the actions of reading and writing, as the style name implies. It is very important for people with this learning style to understand deeply the keywords used in their classes and knowledge-based experiences. Keeping a running glossary of terms is an excellent idea for this learning style. People in this category also learn best by re-reading and re-writing summaries of books, lectures, and other texts… as well as through dictionaries and their own diligent note-taking.
#4: The Kinesthetic Learning Style
Kinesthetic learning involves the use of multiple senses, on the part of the learner, to take in and process information from their classes and life experiences. This type of learning can also be referred to as “experiential learning.” People with this learning style learn by doing. It’s a completely hands-on style. To make sure this type of learner is engaged fully, it is vital to incorporate active movement into the lessons where possible. Tactile learning tools (along with the option to physically get up and move around) are great to both create and use in classes, too!
