Virtual school students love their educators! Out of 703 nominations Glennan Saraceno of North Carolina Virtual Academy was selected to be featured on our blog for Teacher Appreciation Week 2024. Thank you teachers for inspiring and believing in children everyday!
This is what Glennan’s student had to say about her:
“She is one of the nicest teachers I have had in years. She is patient and takes her time to make sure the class understands.”
What is your name?
Glennan Saraceno
Where do you teach?
North Carolina Virtual Academy
How long have you been teaching?
Since 2006 (this is my 17th year)
What inspired you to pursue a career in teaching?
Neither of my parents graduated from high school. I became an electrical engineer, proving that it is possible to educate yourself into the life you want. Having done that, I felt an obligation to give back that opportunity to others.
What is the most memorable moment in your teaching career?
A child, then adult, who I taught in eighth grade tracking me down on Facebook Messenger to ask me my opinion whether he should have his son vaccinated when he became eligible. He said I was the person who had always spoken to him with knowledge and understanding and he needed an opinion from someone he knew would know the facts but that also loved him. I cried for a day, I was so touched.
As an educator, what does the term “School Freedom” mean to you?
The ability of parents and teachers to choose the environment and curriculum that is of the most benefit – whatever that means on any given day – to the child.
What is the #1 advice you give your students?
You absolutely CAN learn this. If not today, if not this way, we’ll find a different way tomorrow.
What have your students taught you?
As long as they know that I love them, they won’t give up.
What would you be doing if you weren’t a teacher?
I’d probably be a bored, retired, engineer. Teaching is something I just can’t seem to give up. I just love the little pumpkins!
Any other final thoughts?
If you don’t teach for the love of the kids, you probably shouldn’t teach.
