Lily Rieman, a high school junior at Indiana Gateway Digital Academy, balances online classes with caring for her growing flock of pigeons, including her hand-raised companion, Merlin. After struggling with the rigid schedule of traditional school, INGDA’s flexible online program allows Lily to manage feeding, health checks, and free-flight time while keeping up with studies. Her passion for pigeons teaches responsibility, patience, and observation, showing how a nontraditional learning path can support unique interests and personal growth.
Texarkana ISD’s Digital Academy of Texas has been certified as a Leader in Me Lighthouse School by FranklinCovey Education, recognizing exceptional leadership, school culture, and academic excellence. As the district’s tuition-free online school, it combines Texas curriculum standards with a virtual learning environment that empowers students to take ownership of their education. Principal Megan Goldsmith credited staff, students, and families for creating a supportive culture where students develop leadership skills alongside academics.
As winter storms disrupt in-person learning, many districts are reconsidering traditional snow days.
